Doctoral graduate Catherine Warin, who completed her thesis on the topic of “Individual rights under European Union law”, has been awarded the Pierre Pescatore prize for the best doctoral thesis by the Doctoral School of Law.

The prize was awarded during a workshop for doctoral candidates and alumni on “The thesis and then?” The Doctoral School of Law organises workshops on a regular basis for current and former doctoral candidates to give feedback on research results and to exchange experiences on the dissertation-writing process and life beyond Uni.lu.

The award, presented for the first time this year, is named in honour of Luxembourg legal scholar and judge at the European Court of Justice Pierre Pescatore. Mr Pescatore was one of Luxembourg’s representatives during the negotiations for the Treaty of Rome. He held numerous honorary titles from universities across Europe in recognition of his outstanding research in the fields of European law, international law and jurisprudence. Pierre Pescatore passed away in 2010, aged 90.

Catherine Warin completed her PhD in 2017 after having joined the Doctoral School of Law in September 2013. She had previously completed her Master’s studies in public administration at Sciences Po Paris and her LL.M. in European Litigation at the University of Luxembourg. Under the supervision of Prof. Herwig Hofmann, she explored the relation between individual rights, obligations and interests in the case law of the European Court of Justice. She currently practises law at the Luxembourg bar.

“I am deeply honoured by this prize, and thankful for four beautiful and fulfilling years at the Doctoral School,” she commented on being awarded the Pierre Pescatore prize for the best doctoral dissertation 2017. The prize jury was composed of academics from the University of Luxembourg affiliated with the Doctoral School of Law.
