One year ago, innovation economists predicted that the prospect for inventing or discovering COVID vaccines within a year was totally irrealistic. This prediction was based on two range of arguments : the classical argument about vaccine research market failures and the somewhat newer argument on the inelasticity of science.

One year after, it looks like the prediction was wrong! In this talk we will discuss various reasons for the phenomenal speed of innovation during the COVID pandemic and some lessons learned from the crisis in the area of science and innovation policy.
