The history of development is one of the most vibrant fields in history, being critically reassessed in the past years. The revision of its chronologies, the expansion of the actors involved in the process, the diversification of the geographies in which it is studied, and the re-evaluation of its dynamics and consequences have been some of the main characteristics of the new ways of doing the history of development.
Not failing to assess the crucial international and transnational processes that shaped the history of development, as an idea and as a practice, this lecture will focus on the ways in which they were mobilised in the relations between Portugal and the former colonial territories in Africa (mainly Angola and Mozambique), since the 1950s and until the post-independence momentum.
