An overview of Luxembourg’s geological history and the development of our planet is given since a few days in a small exhibition put together by Natascha Kuhlmann, a post-doctoral researcher formerly in the Geophysics Group of the University of Luxembourg. Special focus lies on the economical minerals and rocks of the country, for example the Minette iron ore, which has made Luxembourg prosperous.

Learn more about:

Esch: 175 million years ago, earth period Toarcium (Jurassic):

Fossil Bed in the bituminous Posidonia Shale (Ammonites, Molluscs, Brachiopods)

What a difference to today! Animals and plants lived in a shallow sea, without oxygen in the deeper waters and with a very high content of oil in bituminous shales. Numerous finds have been made directly below the University’s campus in Belval: ammonites, small brachiopods, molluscs, crinoids, fish and saurians.

Also exhibited are the most important minerals and some rocks from Luxembourg. Since the geologists work practically in the field, some tools are also on display.

The organiser, who is a geologist, will give a short introduction in December.
