Laurence Marfaing is a historian. Her research focus is on trade, migration and mobility in West Africa. The conference will be in French

The conference is held in the framework of the seminar "Research on migration issues – reflecting the researchers’ position" (Prof. Dr. Birte Nienaber & Dr. Elisabeth Boesen)

The seminar considers research methods, theories and reflections coming from diverse disciplines (Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Sciences). First a variety of methods used for research on migration issues will be introduced (for example qualitative interviews) and  an overview on new concepts and theories of migration are given. This is  done by using mainly Luxembourgish, European and African case studies. Second, the position of the researcher in the context of migration studies, considering, for example, institutional racism, Euro-centrism and processes of “othering” are  critically reflect.

In order to provide a deeper insight into these issues and recent developments in migration research several well-known migration scholars are invited to give a lecture on their work.
