On 6 June 2023, the University of Luxembourg and its International Relations Office hosted the annual International Awards Ceremony 2023 on Belval Campus.

The event was held to honour recipients of prestigious study-abroad opportunities. They included winners of the Top Student Prize, co-funded by Sophia University, and the U.S. Embassy Scholarship , as well as all students selected for an international study-abroad semester under the University’s Global Exchange Programme. The event marked the 15th anniversary edition of both the US and the Japanese scholarship programmes.

Rector Jens Kreisel, the Ambassador of Japan to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, H.E. MATSUBARA Tadahiro and the Ambassador at the Embassy of the United States of America in Luxembourg, H.E. Thomas M. Barrett, were present to honour this year’s recipients.

For many years, the University of Luxembourg has been supporting student mobility beyond the borders of Europe and making a wide range of mobility opportunities available to its students. This year, almost 50 students have been nominated for a stay at a partner university outside Europe as part of the Global Exchange Programme without the burden of additional tuition fees. During the academic year 2023-2024, they will be studying for one term in the U.S., Australia, Canada, Japan, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea or Taiwan.

They are not only ambassadors of the University of Luxembourg but also of the Grand Duchy itself. They will embrace the new experiences, build new friendships, and return filled with new ideas and perspectives. Their journeys will no doubt enrich our university community upon their return.

Furthermore, two of these students were awarded by the U.S. Embassy Scholarship for their stay in the United States. This year, the laureates are Mihaela Buzu, Master student in Finance and Economics and Arthur Pesch, Bachelor student in Economics.

As to the University of Luxembourg’s Top Student Prize, it is awarded this year to ten of the best students within the University’s three faculties, who are invited to an international summer school. It is a 3-week summer session in Asian studies at Sophia University in Tokyo, which will take place this year from 30 June to 21 July 2023. Each student will delve into the depths of Japan’s rich culture and history, emerging with a broader perspective and deeper understanding.
