On June 28th and 29th the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust invites experts, laymen and students to a conference on cryptography.

The 12 speakers from 5 countries will come from internationally renowned universities like Stanford and the Sorbonne or famous organisations like the NSA.
The two day conference, organised by Prof. Peter Ryan, member of SnT and expert in the field of “applied security”, will be a held on the occasion of the 80th birthday of Dr. David Kahn, author of the most famous book in the field of cryptography called ‘The Codebreakers’. David Kahn will join the conference and give the closing talk ‘My life in Cryptology’ on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The talks will be accessible to non-specialists; anyone curious about the past, present and future of cryptography & intelligence is welcome. Registration for the symposium is free but online registration is strongly advised to assure participation.
David Kahn is arguably the most famous writer on cryptography subjects. His book ‘The Codebreakers’ was first published in 1967 and for decades was the only widely available and readable book on the making and breaking of codes and ciphers. For many researchers in the field this book was an inspiration and a key ingredient in setting them on their professional course. This was certainly the case for Peter Ryan, organizer of this conference. "My father gave me a copy of 'The Codebreakers' when I was about thirteen and I was completely captivated", explains Peter Ryan, who is doing research in cryptography and information assurance. "When I realised that David had turned 80 this year the idea of staging an event in Luxembourg to celebrate his contributions sprang to mind", says Ryan.
Additional talks will range from the deciphering of the “talking knots” of the Ancient Inca to quantum cryptography, and from the advent of computers with the breaking of the Enigma to the dawn of the new era in cryptography with the invention of Public Key cryptography.
