Professor Yannick Baraud has recently joined the University of Luxembourg as responsible for the European Research Area (ERA) Chair in Mathematical Statistics and Data Science entitled “SanDAL”. Within the Mathematics Research Unit, he will create a high-level research group in mathematical statistics and data science.

Funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme with a budget of 2.5 million euros for the period 2019-2024, the mathematical statistics project will boost the university’s research and training capabilities in data science and SanDAL as well as bridge potential collaboration with local industry partners, stakeholders and other research groups on a multidisciplinary scale.

Before joining the University of Luxembourg in August 2019 as full professor, Yannick Baraud had an extensive experience in the field of data science. He studied mathematics at École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay and obtained his PhD at the University Paris-Sud Orsay in 1998. He held a position of CNRS researcher at École Normale Supérieure de Paris before being nominated professor at the University of Nice in 2003.  During his work there, he created a team in probability and statistics and a Master in Applied Mathematics and Engineering. In addition, he was also appointed as head of the Laboratory of Mathematics Jean Alexandre Dieudonné in 2012.

The ERA Chair research activities will focus on two areas: “High-dimensional data analysis” to have a deeper understanding of emerging computational tools and “New mathematical tools for contemporary statistics” to develop new and more sophisticated statistical methods. In addition, new teaching programmes at Master and PhD levels will be elaborated to provide future students with the necessary skills in mathematical statistics and data science to understand, develop and apply new tools in various fields.

As chair holder of the SanDAL project, Prof. Baraud will play a prominent role through the creation of a strategic research programme and the recruitment of a high-level research team. “Over the course of the project and beyond, my team and I shall do our best to promote this great university over the world and share our enthusiasm for statistics and data science to the students of Luxembourg and abroad”, explains Yannick Baraud.

Prof. Yannick Baraud will give his inaugural lecture entitled “On the evolution of data science” on 23 January 2020 in Belval.
