Situated in the heart of one of the principal institutional centres of the EU, the University is launching a new bilingual Master in European Governance. Start: Winter semester 2010/11.

The Master’s programme, taught in English and French, is of two years’ duration (120 ECTS), and is based on the research programme in European Governance established at the University in 2004.

The goal of the programme is to train experts in European public policy. As underlined by the course director, Professor Robert Harmsen, ‘The programme will permit students to develop an advanced understanding both of the functioning of the European Union policy-making system and of a range of specific public policy areas, particularly with reference to economic, social and environmental policies’.

Distinctive features of the Luxembourg Master in European Governance include not only its bilingualism and interdisciplinarity, but also the insider’s view of EU decision-making processes afforded to students through both practitioner-led seminars and internship opportunities. The core academic staff of the programme include Patrick Dumont, Professors Robert Harmsen and Harlan Koff, and Dr. Philippe Poirier (Coordinator of the European Governance Research programme), as well as historians Professor René Leboutte (Jean Monnet Chair) and Professor Jean-Paul Lehners.

The programme leads to a broad range of career opportunities, including the European institutions, national and regional administrations, multinational enterprises, non-governmental organisations and journalism, as well as teaching and research.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS) in Political Science or a related area of the social sciences or humanities. A high level of proficiency in English and French is necessary. Entry to the programme is competitive. The first intake to the Master’s programme will be welcomed in September 2010 on the University’s Walferdange campus.
