As of 1 January 2022, the University of Luxembourg has become the headquarters of the International Federation for Public History. This constitutes a new partnership to develop international research networks.
Public history is a field of research, teaching, and practice that focuses on public accessibility and engagement. Public history encourages the dissemination of research beyond academic circles as well as the public participation through collaboration and co-production. The International Federation for Public History was created in 2011 to develop and support international networks of researchers, practitioners, and projects. In August 2022, its World Conference is taking place at the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany.
The University of Luxembourg has become one of the international leading research institutions in public history. The Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH) at the University of Luxembourg is particularly active in public outreach and dissemination through digital tools and methods. With international research projects, collaboration with cultural institutions, crowdsourcing and citizen science projects, and publications, the C²DH has, for years, been a privileged partner to the International Federation for Public History. “We are very happy to act as headquarter of IFPH”, says Prof. Andreas Fickers, Director of the C²DH. “Public history is one of the core missions of and the experimenting with new digital forms and formats of historical storytelling and exploring new collaborative ways of engaging with history in the public realm is perfectly in line with the University’s strategy of fostering citizen science”.
The University of Luxembourg becoming the headquarters of the International Federation for Public History represents a step further in this long-term partnership. It will provide new opportunities for international research, projects, and publications. Member of the C²DH and former president of the International Federation for Public History, Thomas Cauvin will act as liaison officer.
