Are you already engaged in addressing sustainability challenges? Personally or professionally? Are you struggling with the complexity of seeking to contribute to change in dynamic and strongly interdependent human-environment-technology systems? Transformative science for sustainability is a newly emergent approach to scientific inquiry that draws on expertise and knowledge from the natural and social science and the humanities, and that is embedded in practice. The objective is to engage diverse experts and stakeholders in collaboratively gaining an enhanced understanding and repertoire of action on dynamic interdependencies in changes in the social, economic, technological and environmental spheres. Core methods include collaborative systems mapping and scenario approaches in order to build capacity in future-oriented systems thinking.

This book equips readers with a better understanding of how one might actively design, engage in, and guide collaborative processes for transforming human-environment-technology interactions, whilst embracing complexity, contingency, uncertainties, and contradictions emerging from diverse values and world-views. Each reader of this book will thus have guidance on how to create and engage in similar initiatives or courses in their own context. It is a comprehensive textbook for undergraduates, postgraduates, and practitioners from any disciplinary background studying the theory and practice of sustainability science. Each chapter takes a critical and reflective stance on a key issue or method of sustainability science. Contributing authors offer perspectives from diverse disciplines, including physics, philosophy of science, agronomy, geography, and the learning sciences.
