Certificate in Sustainable Development

Certificate in Sustainable Development and Social Innovation:

The Certificate aims to provide a better understanding on the complex challenges, choices and trade-offs societies, organizations and individuals face as we reach the bio-physical limits of the carrying capacity of our planet. Participants will develop new knowledge, attitudes and skill sets to better act upon these challenges.

This certificate is designed

  • For professionals and students from all levels and degree programmes.
  • As additional activity compatible with full time employment and enrolment in a Bachelor, Master or Ph.D. programme.

This certificate provides

  • Tools for social learning allowing participants to tap into the collective intelligence of diverse groups of stakeholders and experts on issues such as local water- and energy-production and consumption, waste and recycling issues, and affordable and sustainable housing and transport.
  • Participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to make better informed and more reflexive judgments and  to act as change agents at home and at work.

The courses gives

  • An overview on most recent academic insights on alternative approaches to social organisation of technological and infrastructure development, material production and consumption, and scientific research effecting sustainable transformation of society.
  • Insights into new forms of accountability of individuals and organisations for the use of scarce natural resources and energy and the role of measurement, indicator and reporting regimes in the information age and their role in effecting transformational change.

Modules:

The Certificate requires completion of:

  • The two core courses:
    1) Science and citizens meet challenges of sustainability (taught: summer semester)
    and
    2) Social Enterprise and social Innovation (taught: winter semester)
  • And at least one peer group project associated with the two core courses.

The remaining 4 ECTS can be obtained either by completing:

  • An auxiliary course: ‘Sustainability reporting based on the Global Reporting Initiative’ or‘Global Environmental Change in the Anthropocene’, or
  • A second peer group project associated with a core course, or
  • An internship in an associated organization.

Language: Lectures will be held in English. Our lecturers are multilingual and can interact with you in all official languages of the University.

Costs:  The normal € 200 fee per semester for programme registration with the University applies.

Venue: Tuesdays, from 5:15 to 8:30 PM. Limpertsberg campus, Luxembourg.

Core course 1:  Science and citizens meet challenges of sustainability

From 23 February to 24 May - Tuesdays from 17:15 to 20:30

An interdisciplinary open course for exploring responsibilities citizens can assume in a knowledge society

The University of Luxembourg is offering a course for exploring challenges of sustainable development, and responsibilities we can assume as citizens and as scientists.  The course "Science and Citizens meet Challenges of Sustainability" (SCCS) is open to applications from the public and students from all degree programmes.  Participation in the course means joining a diverse learning community with representatives of firms, NGOs, education, government, students and thirteen lecturers from diverse disciplines such as ecology, economy, political science, physics and psychology. 

Enrolled participants gain a certificate of participation or 6 ECTS and 4 additional ECTS for peer-group enrollment.

A public lecture series is organized in conjunction with this course.
