Prof. Dr. Gilbert Fridgen is PayPal-FNR PEARL Chair in Digital Financial Services at the SnT, the Interdisciplinary Center for Security, Reliability and Trust at the University of Luxembourg.
As head of the Financial Services and Interorganizational Digital Transformations Research Group (FINATRAX), he analyzes the transformative effects of digital technologies on individual organizations as well on the relationship between organizations. He thereby especially addresses potentially disruptive technologies like Blockchain/DLT, Artificial Intelligence, Internet-of-Things, or Quantum Computing. His research involves innovative business models, regulatory compliance (RegTech), IT strategy and (risk) management, IT capabilities and performance, as well as the design of innovative solutions. In his projects and partnerships, he collaborates with various industries, like financial services (FinTech), energy, mobility, manufacturing, consulting, as well as with public bodies (LegalTech).
Prof. Fridgen frequently publishes in academic journals and conference proceedings in management, computer science, and engineering, as well in outlets at the intersection of these disciplines. He was nominated and received best paper awards at internationally recognized conferences. He edited conference proceedings of the most important German, European and International Conferences of Information Systems. He is an active reviewer for various academic journals.
He regularly speaks at business-related conferences and gives interviews to media outlets. He served as an expert for multiple governmental bodies, such as the German Bundestag and altogether 6 German Federal Ministries as well as for the European Commission with its European Blockchain Partnership and European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI) and in the Academic Advisory Board of the International Association for Trusted Blockchain Applications (INATBA).
Prof. Fridgen received his Diploma in Managerial Economics from the University of Augsburg in 2005, with majors in Financial Engineering, Information Systems, and Strategy& Organization. In parallel, he finished a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Electronic Commerce. He did his doctoral degree at the Research Center Finance & Information Management and finished in 2010. From 2011 to 2013 he was deputy Professor for Business Engineering, especially Finance, Operations & Information Management at the University of Augsburg.
From 2013 to 2019, he was appointed Associate Professor for Information Systems and Sustainable IT Management at the University of Bayreuth, Deputy Director of the Fraunhofer Project Group Wirtschaftsinformatik, and Deputy Director of the Research Center Finance & Information Management. Today, he is still Adjunct Professor with the Research Center Finance & Information Management and collaborates closely with the Fraunhofer Project Group Wirtschaftsinformatik and its Fraunhofer Blockchain Lab.

Gilbert Fridgen was granted research funds from European, Luxembourgish, and German programs. In terms of fundamental research, he was granted funding from the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and from the German Research Foundation (DFG). Through collaborating closely with companies and public institutions, he acquired further third-party funds for applied research projects, i.a. from partners such as Audi, BMW, Hilti, McKinsey, Nord/LB, Senacor, and the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.
Altogether, he was able to acquire 8-digit research funding, accumulated many years of experience in managing fundamental and applied research projects, as well as in leading people in a project setting.
