The 2021 edition of the Gala IT One was held on 7 December 2021 at LuxExpo The Box. Organised by Farvest, this insightful conference gathered IT experts from all over the country and awarded some of the most prominent personalities and companies in Information and Communications Technology. This year, both SnT and Dr. Jean Hilger were awarded at the Luxembourg ICT Awards, in a ceremony that closed the conference.

The 15th edition of the Gala brought together professionals from the IT sector in an important occasion to get the latest updates as well as network at a local level. With talks from various IT experts, including Prof. Yves Le Traon, Deputy Director of SnT, and Fabrice Aresu, CEO of LuxTrust, the event focused on “The Data Economy Marathon” to understand and discuss the challenges of digital transformation in business.

Le Traon, who was recently inducted as IEEE Fellow for having achieved extraordinary qualifications in Computer Science, delivered a session entitled “Building a Data Science Lab in a Financial Company”. In particular, he explained what financial companies are expecting from data science, what are the capabilities of this field in Finance, and how machine learning can improve processes in key financial areas such as fraud detection. The conference ended with a networking cocktail, which was followed by the anticipated awards ceremony.

Since 2007, the Luxembourg ICT Awards aim to encourage innovation in the IT market to develop state-of-the-art solutions, even more so in a world where data is the biggest asset. At the event, SnT obtained the “ICT Business Partner of the Year” award for “leading and successfully implementing development, software and/or hardware integration, or infrastructures projects, bringing real added value to its clients.”

“At SnT, we partner with private and public actors to address their long-term challenges. By advancing technology through research, we help them provide more competitive services and systems. We are therefore honoured to receive this award, which stands as a testimony of our commitment to expanding the capabilities of Luxembourg’s ICT landscape,” said Björn Ottersten, Director of SnT.

Dr. Jean Hilger, honorary professor at SnT since 2014, was presented with the jury’s “Inspirational ICT Personality of the Year” award for his career, his achievements and efforts to inspire both peers and future generations. Hilger is the former Vice President and CIO of Spuerkeess, now serving as Innovation Advisor to the CEO of Spuerkeess. He is also the founding President of ICT Spring Europe, Chairman of LUXHUB and Chairman of the Digital Strategy Committee at the Luxembourg Bankers’ Association (ABBL).

“Over the course of my career, I have seen the ICT sector in Luxembourg grow into the powerhouse it is today, supporting the expansion of key fields such as Finance and Space, fostering entrepreneurship and the creation of new business models. I am thankful for this award that, more than a point of arrival, to me is a reminder of the opportunities that lay in front of us as a country,” said Hilger.

Congratulations to the SnT staff and Hilger for these remarkable achievements in ICT.
