Jiangshan Yu from the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust at the University of Luxembourg has been awarded the 'Chinese Government Award for outstanding students abroad.'

This prestigious award celebrates the achievements of Chinese doctoral students studying abroad whose research isn’t funded by the Chinese government. It includes a prize of 6000 US Dollars and it is very competitive as applicants are nominated by Chinese embassies in over 30 countries.

Jiangshan is thrilled to be among the nominees:

"I’m always passionate about applying research results to solve real world problems. Ultimately, my biggest dream is to come up with a game-changing idea that will reshape the world. This award celebrates all the milestones I’ve achieved in my doctoral research on post compromise security so far. Receiving such an accolade so early in my research career is very encouraging, and it certainly inspires me to further contribute to the cyber world."

The native Chinese researcher spent the past seven years studying abroad in Australia and the UK. So far, the focus of his research has been on cryptographic key management, crypto-currency, public-ledger-based applications, secure authentication, and post compromise security. More specifically, he co-designed a 'system on a chip (SoC) secure boot' solution for Huawei Ltd to manage their network devices securely. Meanwhile, his research findings on public ledger applications were picked up and further developed by a startup company, attracted funding support from the UK government, and made him a finalist of the Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Fellowships.

Jiangshan moved to Luxembourg right after completing his PhD in 2016. At SnT, he joined the CriTix team, led by Prof. Paulo Esteves-Verissimo. Building on his previous research on public ledger applications, he is currently working on improving the security and performance of bitcoin.

The award ceremony will take place on 28 April 2017 at the Embassy of China in London.
