Infinite Capacity? - November 18, 2013

Abstract: Currently, the global effort is on 5G and investigating advanced radio and network techniques in meeting expected mobile data traffic volume of 1000  times in 2020 compared with that in 2010. In parallel, the radio regulatory bodies are trying to find new spectrum in order of at least 1000MHz for this purpose. If the mobile data volume increases at the same pace of doubling every year, the traffic will be 1,000,000 times in 2030 and there again there will be search for new spectrum. Obviously, this trend of keep increasing the radio spectrum is unsustainable and we are bound to ran out of useful spectrum one day. The question we need to ask ourselves both industry and academic community is that; is it possible to have “infinite capacity. The talk will present current technical challenges in meeting requirements of mobile broadband system in 2020 and then provide new concept of “Infinite Capacity” as a new paradigm shift in research for 5G, 6G and beyond.

Rahim Tafazolli is the Director of the Centre for Communications Systems Research (CCSR) and 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC), Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, The University of Surrey in the UK.
He has published more than 500 research papers in refereed journals, international conferences and as invited speaker. He is the editor of two books on “Technologies for Wireless Future” published by Wiley’s Vol.1 in 2004 and Vol.2 2006.
Professor Tafazolli is currently chairman of EU Net!Works Technology Platform Expert Group, board member of the UK Future Internet Strategy Group (UK-FISG). He was appointed as Fellow of WWRF (Wireless World Research Forum) in April 2011, in recognition of his personal contribution to the wireless world. As well as heading one of Europe’s leading research groups.
