Stephan Leyer studied physics at the University of Karlsruhe where he obtained in 2004 his PhD degree on Metal Insulator Transition in Rare Earth Hydrides. He then pursued his Post-Doc research at the Max-Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching (IPP).
In 2005, he worked within the industry sector starting from system engineer at Framatone to become research and development manager at Areva. Eight years later, Stephan Leyer was appointed as a professor of thermodynamics and energy systems at Technische Hochschule Deggendorf. In 2015, he joined the University of Luxembourg as a professor in the field of thermodynamics, mass and heat transfer within the Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication (FSTC).
