Stéphane Bordas, Professor of Computational Mechanics at the University of Luxembourg’s Department of Engineering, has been named Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.
The prestigious Fellowship honours “outstanding contribution to the world of learning”, where each nominee goes through a process of rigorous assessment by their peers before being admitted as a Fellow.
Prof. Bordas was nominated and elected for his multi-disciplinary contribution to cross field research. As a professor in Cardiff University School of Engineering during his tenure from 2010 to 2013, he led a multi-disciplinary institute comprising 15 academics. Another salient point which led to his election is the international recognition of his work in Cross-Field, Engineering and Computer Science. In particular, Prof. Bordas has been ISI Clarivate Highly-Cited Scientist in multi-disciplinary research since 2015. According to Research.com, he is listed among the top 97 in Aerospace Engineering in the world.
He specialises in multi-disciplinary data and computational sciences applied using High-Performance Computing. He is the Editor in Chief of one of the most prestigious journals in Mechanics (Advances in Applied Mechanics) since 2013 and executive editor of Data-Centric Engineering, a multi-disciplinary journal at the interface between computational sciences, data sciences and their engineering applications.
Prof. Bordas is also the founding director of the Data and Computational Science Doctoral Programme at the University of Luxembourg, which is currently training about 50 Ph.D. students at the interface between computational science, data science, and applications ranging from social to neuroscience.
Talking about his nomination, Prof. Bordas said, “I am grateful for this recognition of the work I have done to build a multi-disciplinary international research community around computational science. Without the support of Cardiff University, the University of Luxembourg and the University of Glasgow and that of my mentors: Prof. Nenad Bičanič, Prof. Bhushan Karihaloo and Prof. Chris Pearce, as well as Prof. Hywel Thomas, this would never have been possible.”
