The second Math Camp, organised by the University of Luxembourg from 6 to 17 September 2021, gathered more than 150 new students who were interested in being well prepared to start their bachelor degree in mathematics, physics, engineering or computer science.

The camp was divided into two weeks. The first week was the Boot Camp which serves as a refresher course on high school level mathematics. Students had lectures in the morning and were split into small groups in the afternoon with “coaches” (the coaches this year were more advanced mathematics students from the University of Luxembourg). In the second week, the Prep Camp offered an introduction to concepts used throughout bachelor studies. The Prep Camp was taught in a more standard university format, helping participants get used to what awaits them in the coming years. Both camps went really well, giving student the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the way in which typical university courses are taught and to discover the university campus.

“This second year of Math Camp was a little different from the first, in light of restrictions due to COVID and other things. In particular we had to change the way the Boot Camp worked and reduce the number of in-person sessions for the students. The students adapted well, but we are looking forward to organizing a camp with everyone present. Personal interactions are at the heart of how the Math Camp was envisioned, and hopefully next year we’ll be able to make it happen”, comments Bruno Teheux, Ivan Nourdin, Hugo Parlier from the Department of Mathematics (DMATH) who conceived and organized this initiative.
