On 30 September 2021, around 70 participants attended the third edition of the Mathematical Careers Day at the University of Luxembourg, on Belval campus. Bachelor, Master and PhD students in mathematics and related fields had the opportunity to learn from professionals and exchange about the variety of job positions open for mathematicians in Luxembourg and beyond.

The event was introduced by Prof. Gabor Wiese, Study Director of the Master in Mathematics and Head of the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Applications at the University of Luxembourg. He was very pleased to welcome so many participants and to address the diversity of potential careers for students with high skills in mathematics. “People generally think that if you study mathematics, you will obviously become a teacher in mathematics. Of course, this is an option but there are many other possibilities in various sectors”, says Prof. Wiese.

Moderated by Keith Amoss, Career Coach and member of the People and Leadership Group of the British Chamber of Commerce for Luxembourg, the round table gathered professionals to exchange about the different challenges and opportunities for mathematicians in different sectors.

Roubila Bachiri, Recruiter at Amazon, Terence Butler, Recruitment Specialist at ArcelorMittal and Cornelia Naumof, Director Talent Acquisition & Talent Management at SES shared their viewpoints as human resource specialists while Gildas Blanchard, Senior Manager Capital Markets & Financial Risks at Deloitte and Jacopo Scarpelli, Quantitative Risk Analyst at the European Investment Bank shared their viewpoints as finance specialists.

They exchanged about a lot of topics such as the career paths open to mathematicians, the type of jobs mathematicians can apply, the tips for a successful interview. Then, students could meet company representatives during speed meeting sessions and enjoy a buffet dinner.

A fourth edition is already planned for 2022.
