ArcelorMittal Chair of Steel Construction

The ArcelorMittal Chair of Steel Construction (AMCSC) is a cooperation of ArcelorMittal and the University of Luxembourg for education, research and consulting in civil engineering with focus on steel structures.

The chair investigates the steel construction of tomorrow for high-performance buildings and construction techniques, it develops new structures and design rules for innovative steel- and steel composite structures and investigates high-tech façade systems to reduce energy consumption and improve the building’s internal comfort. A strong emphasises lies on the reduction of greenhouse gases and improvement of environmental friendliness with the development of green solutions for a circular economy.

The Chair is active in National and European Research Projects, CEN Standard Committees, the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS) and the German Welding Association (DVS).

Research and Development are core activities for ArcelorMittal: the company is relentlessly planning, thinking and investing for the long term in order to generate lasting value for our stakeholders, shareholders, and society as a whole as well as creating a sustainable future. The Chair is an initial step towards an enduring cooperation between Luxembourg's largest industrial employer and the University. Research will contribute to reducing energy consumption and thus support the approach of delivering sustainable steel solutions. Furthermore, the combination of steelmaking competency with the University's research potential is an opportunity to support Luxembourg on its way to becoming a leading country in the knowledge-based society of the 21st century.

The main topics of the Chair are:

  • Dismountable and reusable steel structures, circular economy and “green” steel structures,
  • Development and improvement of composite structures,
  • Development of design rules and guidelines,
  • Research at the intersection between the building structure and the façade systems, structural glazing and fixation systems,
  • Modular construction and material flows,
  • Composite steel and concrete structures

The ArcelorMittal Chair of Steel Construction is located in the Department of Engineering of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine of the University of Luxembourg.
