Co-organised with the Learning Alliance: International Law for Youth (LAILY) and the Comité pour une Paix Juste au Proche-Orient (CPJPO). Focusing on the 2004 Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice on the construction of a wall by Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, the award-winning one hour documentary film Broken provides unique cinematic insight into the processes and limits of international law. Including extensive interviews with ICJ justices and other key actors in the process, the film compellingly juxtaposes an account of international law as it is shaped in The Hague and the wider UN system with an understanding of the very tangible consequences of its operation and failures on the ground. After the screening of the film, there will be a discussion period with producer Stefan Ziegler. The event will also provide an occasion for a presentation and discussion of a wider LAILY project currently in development to bring international law into the secondary school curriculum by way of innovative, multimedia course materials.
