Physicalism, roughly put, is the view that everything is physical, or that there is nothing over and above the physical. Panpsychism, again roughly put, is the view that mentality is ubiquitous: Experiential qualities or other mental features are not restricted to macro-entities like us and other biological organisms, but can also be attributed to more fundamental entities, or in the extreme case, to any entity whatsoever. Panpsychism has recently regained attention and a growing community of advocates, especially when it comes to those variants that are collected under the label “Russellian Monism”. Here, I investigate the relationship between physicalist and panpsychist views, and argue that contrary to what some authors suggest, certain panpsychist views are indeed compatible with physicalism. The metaphysical structure of the different views indicates that the dividing line between physicalist and non-physicalist views cuts right through the panpsychist camp. Relatedly, I show that adding a non-fundamental mentality constraint to one’s account of physical properties in order to avoid the incompatibility of physicalism with dualism, as some have proposed, is a case of throwing out the baby with the bathwater, as it renders conceptually incoherent some live panpsychist views much too easily. I instead propose a novel account of the physical that avoids both the unwanted compatibility of physicalism with dualism and the conceptual incoherence of live panpsychist views, and is in line with the idea that certain panpsychist views are better considered variants of physicalism.
