Ottavia Cima is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher in Economic Geography. She holds a Master's degree in Geography from the University of Zurich and a PhD in Geography from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.

Her research before joining the University of Luxembourg focused on rural development in Asia. Her investigations on the governance of infrastructural projects in Nepal shed light on the complex processes of renegotiation and reinterpretation of development programmes in the everyday. Her doctoral research on the promotion of agricultural cooperatives in Kyrgyzstan revealed the disheartening and disempowering consequences of hegemonic discourses on development as well as how individual agency can emerge in this context.

Ottavia’s current postdoctoral research shifts the regional focus on Europe – in particular on Luxembourg and Switzerland – while maintaining the theoretical focus on community economies and postcapitalist politics. It aims to identify spaces for individual agency and to lever on these to disrupt hegemonic discourses on the economy. In particular, Ottavia looks at these processes in the context of alternative and traditional agriculture in the rural space.

Throughout her academic career Ottavia has engaged in teaching at different levels, covering methodological and theoretical aspects of the geography study in lectures, seminars and excursions.
