Karolina Barglowski is Associate Professor of Sociology, Social Interventions, and Social Politics. She specializes in migrants’ social protection, family relationships, and transnational social inequality. Before joining the University of Luxembourg, she held several scientific positions at TU Dortmund University, Bielefeld University, University Duisburg-Essen, Max-Planck Institute for the Study of Ethnic and Religious Diversity, University of California in Berkeley, and University of Toruń.

She has extensive experience in managing and leading research projects and in collaborating with various NGOs and stakeholders in migration and social protection. Her work has appeared in numerous leading international journals, and she has co-edited various special issues related to the impact of migration and transnational incorporation on family life, social protection and social inequality. Books and special issues include Cultures of Transnationality in European Migration. Subjectivity, Family, and Inequality (Routledge, 2019), Transnational social protection: Migrant strategies and patterns of inequality (Population, Space, and Place, 2015, together with T. Faist, B.Bilecen, J.J. Sienkiewicz) Gendered dynamics of transnational social protection (Comparative Migration Studies, 2019, together with B.Bilecen, T.Faist, E.Kofman), Migrant Organizations: Multifunctional and Flexible Providers of Social Protection and Welfare in Changing Societies (Social Sciences, 2022, together with S. Petermann, T. Schlee) and Transnational class formation: identities, practices, and symbolic classifications (Global Networks, 2023, together with S. Carlson).

She currently co-leads two large collaborative research projects: 

  1. GEN-MIGRA (2022-2024): Gender, mobilities and migration during and post COVID-19 pandemic- vulnerability, resilience and renewal (DFG funded, TAP scheme; www.genmigra.org) investigates the impact of the pandemic on migrant women and their families in Brazil, Germany, Poland and the UK from a comparative, intersectional and mulit-method perspective. 
  1. MIKOSS (2020-2023): Migrant organizations and the co-production of social protection. (Mercur funded, https://www.uni-due.de/iaq/projekte/mikoss_team.php) investigates the role of migrant organizations in the provision of social protection to mobile populations int he Ruhr Area in Germany.
