Michel Erpelding est Research Scientist à l’Université du Luxembourg, spécialisé en histoire du droit international et européen. Il est le chercheur principal du projet « Forgotten Memories of Supranational Adjudication » (FoMeSA), qui bénéficie du soutien du Fonds national de la Recherche, Luxembourg (C21/SC/15845902/FoMeSA). Ce projet de recherche s’intéresse aux continuités et discontinuités entre les juridictions internationales et hybrides de l’entre-deux-guerres, aussi bien en Europe que dans des contextes coloniaux ou semi-coloniaux, et les juridictions supranationales établies en Europe à partir des années 1950. Avant de rejoindre l’Université du Luxembourg, Michel a été Senior Research Fellow à l’Institut Max Planck Luxembourg pour le droit procédural.
Michel a fait ses études à l’École de droit de la Sorbonne (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne), à l’Université de Columbia (New York) et à l’Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (Paris). Il est docteur en droit de l’École de droit de la Sorbonne. Sa thèse de doctorat, qui examine le statut en droit international de l’esclavage et du travail forcé entre 1815 et 1945, a fait l’objet de plusieurs distinctions et a été publiée en 2017.
Ensemble avec Nikolaos Vagdoutis, il enseigne le cours « Global Constitutional Law II : Institutions » à l’Université du Luxembourg. Il est également chargé d’enseignements à l’Institut de droit des affaires internationales, filière délocalisée de l’École de droit de la Sorbonne auprès des l’Université du Caire. Il est membre du Conseil scientifique de la Max Planck Encyclopedia of International Procedural Law et membre associé de l’Institut de recherche en droit international et européen de la Sorbonne (IREDIES). Il a conseillé la Bibliothèque nationale du Luxembourg, participé à la traduction de la Constitution du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg en langue luxembourgeoise et a été auditionné par la Commission spéciale « passé colonial » de la Chambre des Représentants de Belgique en tant qu’expert scientifique indépendant.
