Digital Biomarkers in Precision Neurology

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) pose a strong and increasing burden for healthcare systems. Typically patients are diagnosed too late. Accordingly, urgently needed novel treatments often fail to demonstrate efficacy in clinical trials. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) based approaches could help to address these issues by identifying patients at risk, supporting biomarker based early diagnosis, stratifying patients according to molecular disease mechanisms and predicting symptom progression. Altogether the vision is thus to move towards a better personalised healthcare.

In my talk I will point out, how digital sensor and device technologies could play a role in this context. In particular, I will focus on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease as two major NDDs and demonstrate the strong connection with AI/ML. Finally, I will elaborate on how a digital biomarker supported personalised healthcare could be implemented as an interdisciplinary effort.

About the speaker

Prof. Holger Fröhlich is Head of the AI & Data Science group and Deputy Head of the Department of Bioinformatics at the Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI). His focus is on Data Science and AI with applications in precision medicine and drug discovery using a broad spectrum of different approaches (kernel methods, ensemble learning, neural networks, Bayesian learning). He has developed multiple AI methods for modeling longitudinal patient data, integration of different data modalities, and combination of knowledge with data driven approaches. He has (co-)authored more than 100 publications (H-index 31). Prof. Fröhlich has been previously involved in BMBF projects IDENTIREST (validation partner), EPP (coordinator of grant proposal), and the EU IMI project AETIONOMY (Data Science lead). In his current position, he is leading SCAI’s modeling activities for longitudinal patient data in RADAR-AD (EU IMI) and The Virtual Brain Cloud (EU H2020). Notably, Prof. Fröhlich’s ongoing modeling activities in RADAR-AD also focus on digital biomarkers in neurodegenerative diseases.
