On Tuesday, 29 November 2022, Claude Meisch, Minister of Research and Higher Education, and Simone Asselborn-Bintz, Mayor of Sanem, broke ground for the new Biotech 3 building on Campus Belval, in the presence of a university delegation and the developers of the building. The Biotech 3, opening scheduled for 2026, will foster interdisciplinary research and outreach activities.

Over 7000 m2 of labs and offices

According to the Minister, the funding decision for the building underlines the strong commitment of Luxembourg to biomedical research, one of the strategic research priorities of the country. It is also an acknowledgement of the successful development of the university, with many research groups evolving and growing over the past decade. The new building will host both laboratory and office spaces for researchers of the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) and the Department of Life Sciences and Medicine (DLSM) of the University of Luxembourg, on a total of 7400 square meters. “Jens Kreisel” explains Prof. State-of-the art infrastructure and an excellent working environment are very important for the University, to attract the best talents from around the globe and to perform outstanding research on important questions of today’s society,, Vice-Rector for Research of the University of Luxembourg.

A brand-new space for research, education and outreach

Besides serving the University’s mission in research and education, the new building will also include dedicated spaces for outreach activities: a visitor centre to welcome participants who take part in various biomedical research projects and a small exhibition area to showcase research carried out in Luxembourg. The building will also host the Scienteens Lab, with a new laboratory fully dedicated to scientific workshops with high school students. These areas will contribute to the University’s third pillar: deepening dialogue and engagement with society.

Bridging the gap, literally

The new Biotech 3 will be located right behind the current Biotech 2 to which it will be connected via a bridge. Through this connection, all biomedical research groups of the LCSB and DLSM that are currently located in various buildings across the campus will be reunited under one roof. “A key factor for LCSB’s research is its interdisciplinary, which lives from proximity and exchange,” details Prof. I am very much looking forward to finally bringing all the groups closer together., Director of the LCSB. “Michael Heneka” The move into the new building is currently envisaged for the beginning of 2026.
