Bachelor en Mathématiques
OBJECTIVES
Students undertaking the Bachelor in Mathematics (BMATH) degree programme gain solid competence in fundamental branches of mathematics, including analysis, algebra, geometry and probability theory. In addition, students have the possibility to learn didactics of mathematics, as well as other disciplines related to mathematics, such as physics or computer science, thus enhancing their understanding of the multiple roles of mathematics in the modern world. Working in close connection with professors and other instructors, students will develop their creativity, their analytic skills, as well as their ability for rigorous thought and argumentation. The BMATH prepares the student for various master programs, especially in mathematics and secondary education, and other disciplines requiring a solid knowledge of mathematics. Students can also enter the job market directly with the BMATH degree. The BMATH is a fundamental step for careers in teaching and research, as well as in the industrial, business and administrative sectors.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the programme, the student is able to:
- possess substantial knowledge and high-level problem solving skills in fundamental branches of mathematics such as analysis, algebra, geometry and probability theory
- possess knowledge and problem solving skills in disciplines related to mathematics, such as physics, computer science, or in didactics of mathematics
- construct and assess mathematical arguments, as well as to develop an appreciation for mathematical rigor and inquiry
- understand and write complex mathematical proofs
- solve mathematical problems by applying adequate mathematical tools, as well as by devising an appropriate strategy of solution
- apply mathematical tools in order to solve problems coming from other branches of science, like physics or computer science
- use mathematical concepts in order to model real-world problems, as well as in order to rigorously assess the pertinence of a given model
- learn independently new mathematical concepts
- effectively work in a team in order to solve mathematics related problems
- work in a multilingual team
- communicate mathematical knowledge, both at a written and oral level, and both to an expert and a non-expert audience
- write a mathematical article, report, or thesis, by applying the strictest professional and ethical standards
