On 13 May 2019, more than 50 attendees from the University of Luxembourg as well as Luxembourgish companies and institutions joined the “BicsLab Partners Day”: the scientific forum to meet and match BicsLab partners and Uni.lu students. This very first edition covered the specific theme: “ICT for a sustainable agriculture in Luxembourg”. The main objective was to enhance the possibility to develop industrial students projects collaborations on ICT (Information and Communications Technology). The different presentations and engaging discussions made this event a real success.

Prof. Dr. Nicolas Guelfi and Dr. Benoît Ries, from the CSC (Computer Science and Communication Research Unit), organised the BicsLab Partners Day, a thematic event on IT and environment, during which the attendees were invited to discover this particular field and meet some Luxembourgish companies working in the area. This was then the opportunity to meet the BicsLab team, bachelor and master students, as well as the academic staff for setting up collaborations related to teaching and research projects. These projects may be bachelor semester projects or thesis subjects (bachelor or master).

The event started with a welcome speech by Dr. Benoît Ries, followed by some presentations of greenware thematic R&D speakers:

  • Mickaël Pascual (Neobuild) : “Urban farming: one of the noble functions of smart buildings”
  • Dr. Maria Rita Palattella (LIST): “Potentials of LPWAN and satellite for agriculture”
  • Dr. Gilles Rock (Geocoptix): “Drones: a powerful tool for precision agriculture”

Then, a panel discussion was set up. Moderated by Dr. Benoît Ries, it was composed by a group of greenware experts from different institutions. They all shared their experience and gave much useful information and advice about ICT for a sustainable agriculture in Luxembourg to the attendees.

  • Gerber Van Vliet (Ministère de l’Agriculture, de la Viticulture et du Développement rural)
  • Thomas Kozlik (Ministère de l’Environnement, du Climat et du Développement durable)
  • Bruno Renders (Neobuild)
  • Serge Heuschling and Alex Mesenburg (Lycée Technique Agricole)

At the end of the event, nine students from a different semester of the BiCS (Bachelor in Computer Science) were awarded prizes for their impressive project, which they carried out during this academic year 2018-2019. The audience voted and awarded the first places to:

Recently launched by Prof. Dr. Nicolas Guelfi (course director of the BiCS), the BicsLab is the Laboratory of the Bachelor in Computer Science. Focusing on three main axes (senseware, software and greenware), the lab aims to support industrial collaborations and students’ entrepreneurship projects.
