For the first time, the University of Luxembourg will participate in the national event “Portes Ouvertes Luxembourg” on Sunday 22 September from 10:00 to 18:00. Enjoy an unforgettable experience and become a researcher for a day!

PHYSICS

During the visit, you will discover:

CRYSTALS

  • The extraordinary colours of liquid crystals
  • Crystals that flow
  • Crystals that live

LIGHT

  • Spectroscopy in research and daily life
  • Discovering ultra-fast phenomena of matter through light: How can it be done?

MAGNETIC LEVITATION

  • How can a train levitate?

MOLECULES

  • No Time For Molecules To Relax
  • Forces Between Molecules

SOLAR CELLS

  • Imaging of surfaces with atomic resolution
  • Fabrication of thin film solar cells

In addition to guided tours into the labs of the different research groups, there will be a mini-workshop offered by the Scienteens Lab at the entrance hall of the Bâtiment des Sciences:

Spectroscopy in research and daily life: explore the importance of light in research by building and using a hand spectroscope. At home, it will allow you to characterise light sources like the sun, your phone’s LED or neon tubes. In research, spectroscopy is used every day to identify substances. By building and using it yourself, you will understand how it works and what it can be used for.

Place: Limpertsberg Campus

ENGINEERING

During the visit, you will discover:

CIVIL ENGINEERING

  • Link between steel and concrete

GEOSPATIAL ENGINEERING

  • Terrestrial Laser Scanning and BIM
  • GNSS Positioning and Geodesy
  • Photogrammetry using Optical Imagery from Drones and Satellites
  • General Introduction to Geospatial Engineering

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

  • CubeSat
  • Fabrication laboratory at Uni – Fab@Uni
  • Laser manufacturing
  • Robotics

RENEWABLE ENERGIES

  • Home energy management systems

WATER MANAGEMENT

  • Biodiesel production from wastewater – utopia or reality?
  • How we can avoid that pharmaceuticals and pesticides enter our surface water reservoirs?

Place: Kirchberg Campus
