Charilaos (Harris) Lygidakis studied Medicine at the University of Bologna (Italy), and obtained a post-graduated diploma on alcohol-related diseases and problems from the University of Florence (Italy). Fascinated by the holistic approach and the patient communication in primary care, he thereafter trained as a specialist in Family Medicine / General Practice in the Region of Emilia-Romagna (Italy).
He has joined the University of Luxembourg, where he is currently working on the clinical trial “Community- and mHealth-Based Integrated Management of Diabetes in Primary Healthcare in Rwanda: The D²Rwanda Study” (the ClinicalTrials.gov identifier is NCT03376607).
This is a twin model PhD research project (Charilaos Lygidakis enrolled at University of Luxembourg, and Jean Paul Uwizihiwe enrolled at the Aarhus University) under the supervision of Professor Claus Vögele (University of Luxembourg) and Associate Professor Dr. Per Kallestrup (Aarhus University). The one-year cluster trial aims at determining the efficacy of an integrated programme for the management of diabetes mellitus in primary health care in Rwanda. It is hypothesised that the establishment of a community health worker programme (“home-based care practitioners”) with regular monthly assessments of diabetic patients and disease management by the programme's community health workers, improves the patients' HbA1c levels, medication adherence, health-related quality of life, mental well-being, and health literacy levels. It is also hypothesised that patients will show further improvement when the aforementioned programme is coupled with a mobile health application for patients that includes diaries, notifications and educational material. The D²Rwanda project has received financial support by the Karen Elise Jensens Fond (Denmark), and the Universities of Aarhus and Luxembourg.
