Bachelor in Physics

OBJECTIVES

The Bachelor in Physics (BPHY) aims at communicating to the student the fundamental knowledge necessary to understand the physical phenomena governing the universe. The students learn how to apply the principles and basic laws of key areas in Physics such as mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics or quantum mechanics. Besides communicating a broad view of physics and familiarizing the students with the necessary mathematical tools, the program strives to develop each student’s capacity for rigorous, precise and critical thought. Elective courses reinforce the core program with a wide range of courses such as geophysics, astronomy, programming, physics didactics and language courses, which add to the curriculum with the objective to broaden the students’ scientific and cultural horizon.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the programme, the student is able to:

  • explain and apply the principles and laws of the key areas in physics (mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics and quantum mechanics) and understand their societal, social and ethical consequences
  • master the methodology of physics; be aware of the exemplary of the acquired knowledge and the need to continuously develop it
  • work in multilingual and international scientific team environments
  • apply mathematical tools, which are appropriate for the resolution of problems emerging in physics
  • apply the elementary techniques used in experimental physics
  • show critical judgement while interpreting results from experiment or theory and be able to constructively handle failure
  • have basic knowledge in solid-state physics, soft matter physics, statistical physics and in advanced quantum mechanics
  • successfully realize a scientific project in the field of physics and start to take on the role of a lead scientist
  • present scientific results in a written form or orally striving for clarity, accuracy and rigour
  • have skills in various areas complementary to the physics curriculum like physics didactics, programming or languages
