In this lecture I will discuss the cognitive and emotional benefits of multilingualism before presenting the results of a re-analysis of a number of quantitative databases with self-reports from over 2000 multilingual learners (Dewaele &
MacIntyre, 2014, to appear) and 513 mono- and multilingual English teachers (Dewaele, Gkonou, & Mercer, 2018; Dewaele & Mercer, 2018) in order to find out whether knowing more languages constitutes an advantage in the learning and teaching of languages.

Dr Jean-Marc Dewaele is Professor of Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism at Birkbeck College, University of London. He is former president of the International Association of Multilingualism and the European Second Language Association, General Editor of the International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism (2013-2018) and incoming General Editor of the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development (2019- ). Jean-Marc Dewaele won research awards from the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (2013) and the International Association of Language and Social Psychology (2016).
