Pierre Werner Scholarship

The Fondation Pierre Werner, under the aegis of the Fondation de Luxembourg, awards an annual scholarship to postgraduate students in the fields of law, economics and finance. The scholarship is awarded in honour of Pierre Werner, former Prime Minister of Luxembourg and prominent European politician.

The scholarship is awarded to outstanding applicants from a European country pursuing research linked to the topic of European integration, monetary issues, democracy or human rights.

Eligibility criteria

Are eligible to apply in the field of law:

  • Students in their first year of doctoral studies at the Doctoral School of Law
  • Students accepted into the Doctoral School of Law starting their studies in 2019

Are eligible to apply in the field of economics and finance:

  • Students applying to the MSc in Quantitative Economics and Finance in 2019-2020 wishing to pursue a PhD at the Doctoral School of Economics and Finance.

Applicants must be EU nationals (excluding Luxembourg) or citizens of a recognised candidate for future membership of the EU (Albania, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia/North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey).

Application procedure

All candidates must submit an application including:

  • Personal statement/motivation letter
  • Download the application form here and duly complete it, incl. description of doctoral studies/research project and how this addresses European integration, monetary issues, democracy or human rights
  • Two letters of recommendation (academic)
  • CV, including list of publications (if applicable)
  • If not already enrolled at the University of Luxembourg, a confirmation letter of their acceptance into their chosen programme of study

The deadline for applications is 7 April 2019 at 23h59.

Selection

Candidates are shortlisted by an academic selection committee. Laureates are confirmed by the Fondation Pierre Werner at its annual general meeting in June.

Laureates are chosen based on

  • Academic achievement
  • Originality and potential of the research work
  • Relevance and impact of the research work in promoting the ideals of the Fondation Pierre Werner
  • Language skills (in particular French, English and German, the working languages of the University of Luxembourg)

Allocation of scholarship

The scholarship money of €25,000 can be divided between up to four successful candidates.

The first instalment is paid immediately following the announcement of the scholarship laureates. The second instalment is subject to a mid-term review. For the 2019 recipients, this review will take place in 2020. The second instalment can be withheld, for example in case of academic misconduct or withdrawal from the PhD programme.

Detailed terms and conditions are set out in an agreement signed between the laureate, the University of Luxembourg and the Fondation Pierre Werner upon selection of the successful candidates.
