The Research Network on EU Administrative Law (ReNEUAL) has won first prize at the “Altiero Spinelli Prize for Outreach: Spreading Knowledge about Europe”, chosen from more than 270 applicants.

ReNEUAL was founded and is coordinated by Prof. Herwig Hofmann together with Uni.lu colleague Prof. Joana Mendes and further researchers from around Europe. ReNEUAL addresses the simplification of EU administrative law, which governs the implementation of EU policies by its institutions and member states. A first set of model rules was published in 2015. They aim to rectify the often unsystematic and non-transparent way in which EU administrative law has developed over time.

The project was one of six first prize winners in this year’s Altiero Spinelli Prize, established by the European Parliament in honour of one of the European Union’s founding fathers. The competition is managed by the European Commission, which set up a team of 36 independent evaluators for its inaugural edition.

In addition to six first prizes (€50,000 each), six second prizes (€20,000 each) and ten third prizes (€10,000 each) were awarded to works that help communicate Europe to its citizens. Prof. Giacinto della Canaea (University of Rome Tor Vergata) was bestowed the award on behalf of ReNEUAL. A prize-giving ceremony was hosted on 20 June in Brussels.
