The Research Unit in Law is proud to present a new book edited by Prof. Joana Mendes published at the start of 2018.

“Allocating Authority – Who Should Do What in European and International Law”, published by Hart Publishing, an imprint of Bloomsbury, addresses the question which European or international institution should exercise public authority.

The volume offers an analysis of this long-standing question, opening up avenues for consideration of normative ways of allocating public authority. Chapters are organised around two key areas: Empirical and Normative Traction, and Iterations in Practice. Drawing on separation of powers thinking, the book considers questions of allocation of authority regarding specific institutions, such as the Court of Justice and in areas such as financial regulation or trade and investment law.

The book was co-edited by Prof. Joana Mendes (University of Luxembourg) and Ingo Venzke (University of Amsterdam). An international group of academics from universities in Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK and the US participated in the publication.

The book is available for purchase online.
