Governments around the EU are putting increasing emphasis on the repatriation of failed asylum seekers. It is a simple fact that some of those whose asylum claims are rejected will not leave voluntarily. Governments have then to enforce the legal decisions by carrying out forced returns, where returnees are escorted back to their country of origin. How can we ensure that human rights are respected during these return operations?

The speaker has several years’ experience as a monitor of human rights during forced returns and he will describe what is being done to ensure that they are respected, both at the national and at the European level.

This event should be of interest to anyone who is concerned by the problems of reconciling respect for legal decisions with protection of human rights.
