ForumZ is a new series of events organised by the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH). It serves as a platform for a critical and open discussion of current issues in contemporary Luxembourg and European history.

On 11 February 2017, the C2DH started its ForumZ series with an event on “Archives for the digital age. Challenges and opportunities”, organised by Karin Priem (C2DH) and a group of young historians from the University of Luxembourg. The event took place at the Casino Luxembourg and was opened by Rainer Klump, president of the University of Luxembourg.

This first ForumZ offered an opportunity to explore the interaction between archives and researchers and between archives and the public in the digital age. It received much attention and was given extensive coverage on the radio, in the press and on social media.

The event was attended by a variety of representatives from national, online and private archives in Luxembourg, and discussions soon turned to immediate and pressing issues such as the lack of digital expertise and proper funding. It became obvious that access to archival sources still has to overcome a number of obstacles and that the absence of a proper infrastructure is giving rise to uncertainties among archives and archivists as to their mission and public role in the digital age.

The next ForumZ events will focus on “The long shadow of WWII” (25 March), “The future of storytelling” (17 June) and “Glocal histories of finance” (7 July). Everybody is invited to follow and comment on the ForumZ activities via
