PayPal (Europe), the Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR) and the University of Luxembourg have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create an FNR PEARL Chair in Digital Financial Services (FinTech). The Chair has an initial duration of five years and will be jointly supported by PayPal and the FNR, and hosted at the university's Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT).
"This is a fantastic opportunity for SnT to further its involvement in shaping the future landscape of digital financial services and technology in Luxembourg”, enthused Lionel Briand, Vice-Director of SnT. "PayPal’s support is testament to our work and a chance to further demonstrate the impact we can have through research and innovation."
Given the importance of the financial sector to Luxembourg, SnT has already placed significant emphasis on developing strategic partnerships in FinTech. Last year, targeted R&D activities included work with partners in financial services and banking such as the Banque et Caisse d’Epargne de l’Etat, the Alphonse Weicker Foundation, Eethic Advisors, and Logo ITS.
SnT’s cutting-edge research-driven technological advancements definitely put Luxembourg on the map for future European R&D investments, Paypal’s partnership paving the way.
Prime Minister Xavier Bettel obtained PayPal CEO, Dan Schulman’s personal commitment for the co-financing of the Chair.
