Research

Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence are funded across the European Union under the auspices of the Erasmus+ programme. They aim at gathering the expertise and competences of high-level experts for interdisciplinary and international synergies for the study of EU-related topics.

The focus is on issues such as economic integration, its national and international dimensions, as well as constitutional and institutional evolution. First research projects include matters such as;

  • the economic governance of the Union;
  • the future of societies with an aging population;

Funding & objective

The Robert Schuman Institute for European Affairs has been awarded funding as an Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for a period of three years until the end of 2018. A Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence is a focal point of competence and knowledge on European Union subjects. Centres of Excellence have a project duration of three years.

Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence:

  • gather the expertise and competences of high-level experts and aims at developing synergies between the various disciplines and resources in European studies, as well as at creating joint transnational activities and structural links with academic institutions in other countries. It also ensures openness to civil society.
  • have a major role in reaching out to students from faculties not normally dealing with European Union issues as well as to policy makers, civil servants, organised civil society and the general public at large.

The objective of the Robert Schuman Institute of European Affairs at the University of Luxembourg is to encourage creative thinking: asking questions, collecting ideas, identifying issues but also developing proposals for further research and development of solutions to pressing societal problems. Through publications, conferences and round-tables, the institute will work to increase visibility on matters of integration and the European Union, to foster informed debate and help develop ideas for the future of Europe.
