  • Organization of a workshop on “Staging Sound in the Museum”, together with Karin Bijsterveld (Maastricht University), the Institute for Sound and Vision (Hilversum) and the Museum of Amsterdam; including the key-note lecture “In Search of the Sonic Aura: Challenging the WYSIWYG Approach in Historical Exhibition Making”.
  • Collaboration and scientific advice in the making of “Virtual Exhibits” in the framework of the EUscreen project (see www.euscreen.eu ; exhibitions are still under construction) and the Tensions of Europe network (see www.inventingeurope.eu)
  • Scientific adviser of the exhibition “consumo ergo sum” of the East Belgian Council of Consumer Protection (2006-2007); I’m actually writing an exhibition concept for the new museum on the history and culture of environment, farming and forestry to be opened in 2014 in Rodt/St.Vith (B).

  • Supervisor of the FNR AFR PDR project "Failure and Success of Dummy Head Recording: An Innovation History of 3D Listening" by Dr. Stefan Krebs (see binauralrecording.wordpress.com)
  • Member of the European (FP 7) research projects „VIDEO ACTIVE – Opening Up Europe’s Televisual Heritage“ (2005-2008) and “EU SCREEN. Best Practice Network” (2009-2012) within the eContentplus-programme of the European Commission (see www.euscreen.eu ). In both projects I acted as mediator between the scholarly and the archival community. Important scholarly outputs of this engagement are the special issue on “Transnational Television History: A European Comparative Perspective” in Media History and the setting up of the open access e-journal VIEW Journal of European Television History and Culture (see www.viewjournal.eu).
  • Main applicant and leader of the NWO research project “Changing Platforms of Ritualized Memory Practices: The Cultural Dynamics of Home Movies” (including 2 PhD and 1 Post-Doc position; 2012-2015). The project aims at analyzing the impact of new technologies for home movie making and screening (from 8mm to video and digital) on the production of family narratives in a long term historical perspective (see homemoviesproject.wordpress.com/)
  • Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies / NIAS (February – June 2011). Member of the NIAS theme-group “The Making of Europe“ which prepares a 6 volume European history of technology (1850-2000) to be published with Palgrave/McMillan in 2015/2016. In the series edited by Johan Schot and Phil Scranton I am co-authoring the volume entitled 'Communicating Europe: Technologies, Information, Events' (1850-2000) together with Prof. Pascal Griset (Paris IV/ Sorbonne). A comparative study in the history of European media 1945-1975" (2005 – 2009). One important output was A. Bignell / A.   • Initiator and responsible manager of a regional history research project on the inventarization and historical analysis of the newspaper „Malmedyer Kreisblatt / St. Vither Volkszeitung (1866-1945)” in cooperation with the Historical Institute of the RWTH Aachen and the Belgian State Archives in Eupen, financed by the government of the German Speaking Community in Belgium. A full digitization of the collection has been realized in collaboration with the Bibliothèque Royale in Brussels and the State Archives in Eupen. The scholarly findings are published in: A.
