Light microscopy equipment under examination

During five days, the Hands-on Light Microscopy Workshop (HOLM 2017) gathered more than 80 participants from academia and industry on Belval campus. Through lectures and practical sessions, they shared their latest findings and technologies in the field of microscopy.
Since centuries, light microscopy is one of the key technologies in biomedical research. Recent technological developments extended the range of applications significantly, which is not only important for basic research, but also for applied life science. “For instance, light microscopy allows to observe the effect of anti-cancer drugs in living cells, and its therefore an indispensable tool for the development and optimization of drugs“, explains Dr Andreas Girod, Coordinator of the Advanced Light Microscopy Facility at the University of Luxembourg within the Life Sciences Research Unit (LSRU).
HOLM 2017 was a great opportunity not only to better understand the basics of light microscopy but also to learn more about the current and future technologies with their wide range of applications. To gain hands-on experience on these state-of-the art instruments, 10 practical workshops were organised by renowned institutions specialised in instrumentation (AHF, Andor, Argolight, Confocal.nl, Hamamatsu, LaVision, Leica, Luxendo, Nikon, Olympus, Zeiss) and in data analysis (Arivis, Bitplane, VIB Leuven), totalling 89 sessions over the course of the event.
Based on the success of this event, the organizers are encouraged to continue this series of workshops. “This second edition confirms the high interest of all stakeholders, namely young and established life scientists, as well as industrial experts to exchange their viewpoints and challenges. The range of features offered by light microscopes is huge, which is very encouraging for our future research activities”, explains Dr Aymeric d’Hérouël, Research Associate at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB).
