Ioannis Asimakopoulos, a doctoral candidate in law at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance, has been accepted as one of thirty junior researchers to join the Europaeum Scholars Programme, a leadership initiative aimed at addressing the cultural, political and societal challenges facing Europe today.
The programme was initiated by the Europaeum, an association of European universities designed to facilitate research collaboration and knowledge exchange. The Europaeum’s members are the universities of Oxford, Leiden, Helsinki, Paris I (Pantheon-Sorbonne), Prague (Charles), Krakow (Jagiellonian), Geneva (Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies), Barcelona (Universitat Pompeu Fabra), Madrid (Complutense), Munich (Ludwig-Maximilian) and St Andrews (Scotland) as well as associate member The Institute of Political Studies, Lisbon. The Central European University in Budapest was made as a ‘Special Member’ for one year in light of the threats to academic freedom that it is currently experiencing.
In 2018, the University of Luxembourg will become a full member.
The scholars initiative is a “world-class programme designed to produce a new generation of leaders, thinkers, and researchers who have the capacity and desire to shape the future of Europe,” according to the organisers.
Following a call for applications, Ioannis Asimakopoulos was selected as one of thirty junior researchers to embark on the two-year programme. Mr Asimakopoulos joined the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance’s Doctoral Training Unit on Enforcement in Multi-Level Regulatory Systems in February 2017. Prior to his arrival, he completed his undergraduate studies in law and an MSc in International Economics and Finance in Greece as well as obtaining a Master in Corporate Law (MCL) at Christ’s College, University of Cambridge. His research focus is on investor protection under the EU Bank Resolution framework.
Also selected to the programme was Igor Tkalec, a doctoral candidate a the “Identités. Politiques, Sociétés, Espaces” (IPSE) research unit at the University of Luxembourg’s Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education (FLSHASE).
The Europaeum scholars started the programme with a study stay at the University of Oxford in January. Over the two years, the group of researchers will study four key areas for Europe’s future – identity, inclusion, sustainability, and growth and development – in Geneva, Leiden, Oxford and Prague, as well as visiting European institutions and attending team work and skills sessions.
